Program Overview
916 Ink empowers youth through creative writing. 916 Ink is Sacramento’s arts-based creative writing and literacy nonprofit that provides workshops and tutoring to transform Sacramento youth into strong readers, confident communicators, and published authors. Our programs increase literacy skills, improve vocabulary, teach empathy, positively impact social and emotional learning, and expand communication skills. We envision a Sacramento region where every child and teen is given access to a culturally relevant creative writing program that leads them to believe in themselves and to understand the power of the written word.
The 916 Ink Read On! program delivers literacy tutoring for striving readers to help them reach grade-level reading goals.
Students enrolled in the Read On! program are elementary school-aged, striving readers who read at a kindergarten to fifth grade level. Students are referred to Read On! by their classroom teacher, their school’s student support team, or administration. Reading tutors (service members, community volunteers and 916 Ink staff) are matched to students, for a minimum of thirty-six sessions to provide research-based tutoring lessons that are proven to reduce the reading gap. Students receive 1:1, three 30 minute tutoring sessions, every week for the length of their involvement.
