Chapter One NFP

Mission:

At Chapter One, we strive to create a world where all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. Therefore, Chapter One has made it its mission to substantially increase the reading abilities of elementary school students by providing 1:1 reading support that young readers need at the times they need it most.

We believe that learning to read is a basic civil right that has been denied to millions of children. It is our mission to serve young learners with high-impact tutoring services to provide an equitable education solution. We have dedicated our team and resources to successfully provide early reading solutions to urban school districts throughout the country; often schools that qualify for Title 1 funding. In a two-year, K-2 program, it is our objective to greatly increase the reading abilities of the students we serve.

Program Description:

Chapter One provides a high-impact tutoring model that builds early literacy foundational skills using a systematic and explicit phonics model. It is directly aligned to the Science of Reading and Common Core reading standards as the curriculum and instruction focuses on phonics, phonemic awareness, word recognition, fluency, and comprehension. Our research-based solution has been tested through 2 RCTs that have qualified our program for an ESSA Tier 1 rating. The 1:1 reading instruction supports K-3 students using short-burst sessions that are developmentally appropriate and maximizes a young student's attention to the material.

Chapter One's solution fuses educational technology with the power of human connection. All tutoring sessions are hosted on Chapter One's innovative proprietary software and led by our highly-qualified tutors, referred to as Early Literacy Interventionists. The platform is accessible on all devices from all internet browsers and simplifies session structure by creating lesson plans, offering engaging reinforcement activities, tracking data, producing reports, and leading data-driven decision making.
