The Koopersmith Family Literacy + Math Program at The Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan
The Koopersmith Family Literacy + Math Program promotes educational equity for elementary school students in NYC District 3 by partnering with schools to offer free high-dose, individualized tutoring to housing-insecure, low-income, and English Language Learner (ELL) students. Our program provides free academic enrichment to ensure students have the foundational skills, individualized attention, and academic support they need to succeed, addressing the learning gaps caused by systemic inequities.
The Koopersmith Family Literacy + Math Program provides consistent, high-quality academic support to housing-insecure, low-income, and English Language Learner (ELL) students in NYC public schools. Our program stays abreast of the latest research in high dose tutoring to deliver impactful academic intervention to students who could not otherwise afford tutoring, using the research-based approaches that low-income students need and benefit from most. In conversation with classroom teachers, administrators, and organizations including the National Student Support Accelerator, we empower tutors with the strategies, training and materials they need to make a lasting change in the lives of their students.
Our approach includes:
-School-Day Support: One-on-one and small-group high dose tutoring in literacy and math from 8am-2:30pm.
-After-School Enrichment: Focused intervention, including literacy and math, designed for ELL students and those needing additional academic support.
-Lunchtime Reading Buddies: One-on-one read aloud and mentorship during lunch.
-Research-Based Curriculum: A pilot 2x/week literacy program using research-based interventions in phonemic awareness, phonics, and comprehension.
We prioritize accessible, low-barrier programming by conducting outreach in deep collaboration with teachers and administrators from each of our partner schools - enabling us to benefit from the trusting relationships that our schools already have with families in their community and target students who are the best fit for our programs.
