Ravenswood Classroom Partners
Since its founding in 2008, Ravenswood Classroom Partners (RCP) has championed the cause of educational equity, driven by the belief that every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn. This commitment translates into action every week, as our 140 dedicated community volunteers travel to the Ravenswood City School District (RCSD) to provide essential, in-class tutoring and mentorship at no charge to the district.
The children of Ravenswood City School District deserve every opportunity to thrive yet, the harsh reality is that only 12% of students in the district are reading at grade level, facing a significant disadvantage from the start. That’s where RCP steps in. RCP has been the school district’s partner providing structured, personalized tutoring support for over 17 years. This year RCP volunteers will deliver over 7,500 tutoring sessions to support classroom teachers every week in their classrooms.
Two part-time staff design and manage our programs. We operate with a lean budget and a passionate volunteer leadership team. Thanks to the support of generous donors who believe in our mission to close the academic achievement gap and build student self-confidence, we are able to coordinate the efforts of 140 volunteers, 30 teachers and reach over 450 students each year.
Our current volunteer programs focus on Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade across three Ravenswood schools. These programs have demonstrated significant positive impact, with teachers reporting improved reading levels and volunteers finding their work deeply rewarding.
Our approach to supporting students is multifaceted:
- Small Group Literacy Tutoring (TK-3rd grade): This is the cornerstone of our program. Our volunteers utilize structured evidence-based literacy programs to deliver targeted interventions that build foundational reading skills. This customized attention addresses specific learning gaps and fosters a love of reading.
- Hands-on Math Support: Recognizing the importance of strong foundational math skills, RCP also provides volunteers who partner with classroom teachers to deliver hands-on math support during the school day.
- Mentoring Book Clubs: For our older students in grades 4th through 6th, we focus on reading fluency and comprehension. Many of these groups are doing repeated reading work as well as RCP facilitated book clubs. These clubs not only foster reading comprehension and critical thinking but also provide a supportive environment for students to connect with positive adult role models and explore new worlds through literature.
