Shoelace Learning
Shoelace Learning’s mission is to “transform readers into fully literate learners through games they love to play.” They focus on making literacy practice fun and accessible—especially for students who might otherwise struggle or disengage through game play.
Here are some ways Shoelace Learning specifically addresses gaps in adolescent learning:
Adaptive, individualized support: Shoelace uses an initial placement assessment, tracks reading comprehension levels (RCLs), and then adapts the content to each student’s current level and needs. For example, they support readers from grades 3–8 who may still have gaps in comprehension.
Engaging game-based format: Many students lose motivation when interventions are rote or feel remedial. Shoelace’s games (e.g., “Dreamscape” or “Dreamseeker Drift”) integrate reading comprehension tasks into gameplay so that practice is more engaging.
Supporting teachers and systems of intervention: The platform provides real-time reports and dashboards so teachers can identify students who need Tier 2 interventions or increased support. This helps close the gap between students being flagged late and receiving targeted help.
Filling “holes” in curriculum: Many curricula focus on certain reading/decoding skills but don’t always provide sufficient structured practice of comprehension, genre awareness, and background knowledge. Shoelace steps in to fill those gaps via assignments and game-based practice.
Accessibility and inclusivity: Recognizing that adolescent learners may have special-education needs, attention issues, or reading delays, the platform includes accommodations (e.g., text-to-speech, adaptable environments) to ensure each learner can access the content.
Evidence of impact: In pilot studies (e.g., an 8-week pilot with Michigan Virtual), students who engaged consistently showed measurable reading growth and increased confidence.
