Tutor Training Toolkit

Tutor Training Profiles include details of the program design, pre-service training format, content scope and sequence, example modules or sessions, and recommendations for leveraging the training content. Each profile also includes a link to or instructions for how to access free training materials from the provider.

Effective tutor training follows a set of development principles on the overall design of the training, as well as specific development principles related to pre-service training, in-service training, and continuous improvement as detailed below. The scope and sequence of each tutor program’s training will depend on many factors. Please see Training & Support in the Toolkit for Tutoring Programs for more detailed guidance.

This training development guidance aims to support tutor program leaders in developing their tutor training and ongoing coaching and includes training development principles and specific training topic guidance.

Rationale

Training and ongoing coaching are characteristics of effective high-impact tutoring programs (see High-impact Tutoring: Effective and Equitable Learning Acceleration). Tutor training can impact both the quality of instruction students receive, and the retention of tutors. The Tutoring Quality Standards include these two standards related to tutor training:
