Understanding High-Impact Tutoring

While many people have been talking about the importance of tutoring, people have questions about what makes tutoring “high-impact.” This High-Impact Tutoring Toolkit, developed by the National Student Support Accelerator and Innovate Public Schools is designed to help families understand and advocate for high-impact tutoring.

High-impact tutoring is when a student gets extra learning time in a small group or one-on-one from a consistent, trained tutor as part of their school day. High-impact tutoring is often confused with “homework help” or reteaching, but neither of those leads to the same learning growth as high-impact tutoring. High-impact tutoring helps students learn the skillsthey need to become independent learners.

High-Impact Tutoring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) For Families and Caregivers

  • The student has at least three sessions every week. Each session lasts at least 30 minutes. When the student gets older, longer sessions of 45 to 60 minutes can be even better.
  • The tutor and the student work to build a good relationship. This helps the student learn and enjoy tutoring.  
  • They use activities and quizzes to see how well the student is doing. This helps them figure out what to teach next.
  • Tutors coordinate lessons with what the student is learning in school.
  • The tutor gets quality training and support to make sure they can effectively help the student.
