Sample Case Studies for Using Data

Purpose: Use this document as a guide to create case studies for use in tutor training. The suggestions can be enhanced to teach tutors how to use data for instructional shifts.

1. Identifying Student Needs
ExampleModeling
A case study might focus on a school using student performance data (e.g., test scores, classroom observations) to identify areas where a significant percentage of students are struggling with a specific concept. This data could lead to a decision to adjust the instructional approach for that concept. The case study would illustrate the process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the data to reveal the specific needs of students, such as difficulties with a particular reading skill or mathematical concept.
2. Adapting Instruction
ExampleModeling
A case study could depict a teacher using formative assessment data (e.g., exit tickets, quizzes) to monitor student progress and identify areas where they need additional support or challenge. This data might lead the teacher to differentiate instruction by providing targeted interventions for struggling students or enrichment activities for advanced learners. The case study would demonstrate how data is used to inform instructional adjustments, such as changing the pace of instruction, modifying teaching strategies, or providing individualized support based on student needs.
3. Improving Learning Outcomes
ExampleModeling
A case study could showcase a school using data-driven decision-making to track student progress and evaluate the effectiveness of different instructional interventions. This data might reveal that a particular intervention is significantly improving student achievement, leading to continued implementation or adjustments to maximize its impact. The case study would illustrate the cycle of data collection, analysis, and evaluation, showing how data is used to make informed decisions that ultimately lead to improved learning outcomes for students.
4. Collaboration and Communication
ExampleModeling
A case study might focus on a school team (e.g., teachers, tutors, special education staff) using data to collaborate on instructional decisions, such as identifying students at risk for academic difficulties and developing individualized support plans. The case study would demonstrate how data facilitates communication and collaboration among educators, allowing them to share insights, develop shared understandings, and make coordinated decisions to support student learning.
5. Data Literacy and Capacity Building
ExampleModeling
A case study could explore how a tutoring program is investing in tutor training and professional development to enhance their data literacy and capacity for data-driven decision-making.The case study would highlight the importance of providing educators with the skills and resources they need to effectively collect, analyze, and use data to inform their instructional decisions.
