    Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my career as a bilingual educator. I have taught grades K-12, served as Instructional Coach, school site and school support administrator. For the last two years, my team and I at LAUSD Division of Instruction Tutoring Services have coordinated On-Demand, In-Person, Virtual, and Home Based Tutoring services for most of our 773 schools in grades K-12. Among my responsibilities is vendor liaison: building strong relationships with over twenty-five vendors, ensuring contract and data compliance, as well as high quality services and support to our students and their schools.

    Catherine Asher is an Assistant Research Scientist at the Youth Policy Lab at University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. Her research uses rigorous, quantitative designs to understand causal effects and treatment effect heterogeneity of interventions and policies that help students’ reach their academic potential. Currently, her work includes evaluations of academic interventions to designed to improve educational achievement among young students; studies of how investigating how technology can be used to improve access to educational resources for families of all backgrounds; and assessments of school-based efforts to support students’ mental health.

Since joining MNPS in January 2022, she has led the growth of high-impact tutoring from about 850 students to over 9,000 students served in Spring 2024. Prior to joining MNPS, Grace taught and held various school leadership roles, including seven years as a principal. Grace enjoys combining instructional leadership and school operations experience to her current role, leading tutoring efforts across 100+ MNPS schools.
    Grace currently lives in Nashville with her husband, Richard, also an educator, and their three children: Margaret, Richard and Will.

    Marina Barnett, DSW, is Assistant Provost for Civic Engagement and Associate Professor of Social Work at Widener University. With over 30 years of experience in community and organizational development, she has secured over $3 million in grant funding to support youth leadership, health equity, and violence prevention. She co-directs the Academic Service-Learning Fellows program and teaches across BSW, MSW, and PhD levels. Her research focuses on community-based participatory methods, GIS mapping, and training residents to conduct local research that drives change.

    Throughout her career in education, Katherine has advocated for students to receive the highest-quality of education regardless of their zip code or family circumstances. Katherine spent 26 years in the classroom as a middle school librarian and is New Jersey’s 2000 State Teacher of the Year. At ETS, led the development of the NBPTS certificates for Library Media and Literacy. She led the development of educator performance-based assessments and worked with six states to develop a common continuum of practice. Katherine led the development of the Teacher Leader Model Standards and the Model Code of Ethics for Educators.

    Xander Beberman is a Senior Research Data Analyst on the National Student Support Accelerator team. He is interested in equitable and responsible uses of AI and machine learning as both a tool for and subject of social policy research. Xander previously served as a Data Scientist at the University of Chicago Urban Labs, where he created predictive modeling pipelines to aid the analysis and implementation of program evaluations related to public health and violence reduction, such as READI Chicago. He also previously served as a Software Engineer at the nonprofit organization Democracy Works, he built and maintained web-based tools to help make voting easier. He holds a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Chicago.

    Monica P. Bhatt is the Senior Research Director at the University of Chicago Education Lab. Dr. Bhatt oversees a portfolio of over a dozen large-scale randomized controlled trials related to improving academic, behavioral, and mental health outcomes for Chicagoans. Her current work focuses on leading the Personalized Learning Initiative, understanding how we can scale the benefits of high-impact tutoring so that more students can benefit. She is the principal investigator on a number of high-profile studies, including individualized instructional interventions like high-dosage tutoring; alleviating mental health for young women; and READI Chicago. Prior to Education Lab, she worked as a researcher at the American Institutes for Research.

    Emma Brunskill is an associate tenured professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. Her goal is to create AI systems that learn from a few samples to robustly make good decisions, motivated by our applications to healthcare and education. Her lab is part of the Stanford AI Lab, the Stanford Statistical ML group, and AI Safety @Stanford. She was previously an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Her work has been honored by early faculty career awards (National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Microsoft Research (1 of 7 worldwide) ), and her work, together with her lab members, has received several best research paper nominations (CHI, EDMx3) and awards (UAI, RLDM, ITS).     Mike Cohen’s career has straddled academic research and entrepreneurial activity, focused on helping human-centered technologies achieve positive real-world impact. He earned his PhD at Berkeley, has published more than 80 academic papers and one book, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

    Mike founded Cignition in 2014 with a goal of helping all students achieve a deep understanding of mathematics (later adding ELA) - both to enable further learning and to be prepared for success in the workplace. Those goals led to a focus on conceptual understanding and collaborative learning, based on ongoing data-driven improvement of all components.

Her work emphasizes systemic change, community engagement, and data-driven practices. Lana believes that achieving excellence requires centering the needs of historically marginalized students and building collaborative, culturally responsive educational systems.

    Kalena Cortes is the Kruse ’52 Founders Professor in the Department of Public Service and Administration at Texas A&M University’s Bush School. Her research focuses on the economics of education, particularly on equity, access, and identifying policies that support disadvantaged students at the PK–12 and postsecondary levels. She is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA). She was also named a 2020 Presidential Impact Fellow at Texas A&M. She earned her PhD from UC Berkeley and BA from UC San Diego.

    Evan Coughenour is a partner in Bellwether’s Strategic Advising practice area. Since Evan joined Bellwether in 2014, his clients have included state education agencies, charter networks, tutoring collaboratives, and postsecondary access and success organizations. Prior to Bellwether, Evan interned at A Better Chicago, worked as both a consultant and special assistant to the CEO at ASI Government, and taught in Washington, D.C., as a TFA corps member.

    Evan holds an MBA with honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, an MAT in elementary education from American University, and a BA with distinction in psychology from Yale.

    Tricia Couts-Everett serves as the Learning Acceleration Administrator at the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, managing the implementation and evaluation of high-impact tutoring initiatives designed to support academic recovery and growth. Working closely with school districts and regional partners, she ensures programs are research-informed and aligned with state priorities. Tricia brings a background in curriculum, school improvement, instructional coaching, and classroom teaching and is committed to helping all learners succeed through high-impact practices that accelerate learning and close opportunity gaps across the state.
