Implementing a Tutor Registered Apprenticeship Program

Implementing a High-Impact Tutoring Program

Please see implementation guidance for a typical high-impact tutoring program here:

Checklist for Implementing a TAP

Now that you have identified and built a strong relationship with your Apprenticeship Training Representative (ATR) and designed your Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), you are ready to begin implementation.

Action StepConsiderations/Guidance
  • Register your TAP
Your ATR will guide you on when your program is ready to submit its RAP application, how to submit your application, and provide an estimate of the expected decision timeline.
  • Recruit, hire, and register Tutor Apprentices
  • Include explicit probationary period language in hiring documents
  • Establish process to provide credit for previous experience if applicable

Resources:

  • Deploy Tutor Apprentices

Share the purpose, benefits, and operations of the TAP with staff if your RAP is providing its own tutoring program or with the contracting entity (e.g., LEA, school).

Resource: New Jersey Tutoring Corps example.

  • Execute Related Instruction (RTI) and On-the-Job Training (OJT)
  • Ensure coordination between RTI and OJT through regular check-ins
  • Develop systems to effectively and efficiently track tutor competency development
  • Establish system to determine completion of TAP
  • Consider, and if feasible, develop systems to support tutor apprentices to earn college credits through their RTI
  • Resource: Tutor Training and Support
  • Pursue funding opportunities

Note: Apprenticeship funding will contribute to, but not fully support a TAP. Therefore a TAP must also pursue additional funding streams to fully fund their program.

  • Comply with TAP administrative requirements
  • Work with your ATR to:
    • Understand state and federal requirements, including any education specific requirements if the credential tutors receive may be used to demonstrate prior learning for a teaching pathway, etc.
    • Learn how to use the Registered Apprenticeship Partnership Information Database System (RAPIDS), a  central apprenticeship database system, or your state's apprentice database system
  • Align your internal systems to efficiently provide information required by RAPIDS or your state's apprentice database system
